The global shift away from plastic straws was a huge win for the planet, and it was something we at RICESTRAWS were incredibly passionate about. My name is Dags, a UK citizen living in Vietnam, and I had seen firsthand the devastating impact of plastic waste on the beautiful coastlines here in Southeast Asia. That’s why I started RICESTRAWS – to do my part for the environment. My small team and I were then focused on providing a genuine alternative to plastic.
We knew that plastic straws were a huge problem, often ranking among the top items found on beaches. By encouraging restaurants and bars worldwide to switch to a greener option, we believed we could make a real difference. Every RICESTRAW contributed to a plastic-free future.
Why RICESTRAWS Stood Out
Sure, eco-friendly straws typically cost more than plastic ones – that was the price of sustainable, natural materials. But RICESTRAWS truly offered an advantage:
- No Compromise on Experience: Unlike some alternatives, our straws had no odor or aftertaste.
- Convenience: They were less breakable, easier to store, and could be disposed of as normal waste – or even eaten, since they were made entirely of natural ingredients like rice and tapioca.
- Community Impact: Every RICESTRAW was made from rice and tapioca grown sustainably by Vietnamese farmers. This directly helped generate income in an area impacted by economic slowdown, giving back to the country that had become my home.
My Amazon Reality Check: Lessons Learned
My journey with RICESTRAWS started with a big idea: importing these eco-friendly straws from Vietnam to the UK and selling them on Amazon. I got listed, but quickly hit a wall. Here’s what I learned the hard way:
- Seek Expert Advice: Before diving into a platform like Amazon, I should have talked to someone who’d successfully navigated it before. Their insights could have saved me a lot of headaches (and money).
- Do Your Market Research: This was a painful lesson. Our rice straws were priced at £0.15 per straw, while established plant-based alternatives were eight times cheaper. Without proper market research, I was flying blind on pricing.
- Find Your Niche: After realizing the broader e-commerce market was a tough climb at our price point, I came to a crucial conclusion: RICESTRAWS was probably a one or two-person business, best suited for premium bars and establishments in London that prioritized sustainability and quality over pure cost.
